Douglas Emhoff was born in 1964 in New York and was raised along with his sister. He grew up in a Christian household. He went to California State University where he graduated from in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and Media Studies.

Douglas Emhoff is a happily married man. His significant other Kamala Harris is a lawyer and politician, famously known as the Junior US representative from California. In 1990, Douglas packed away a Juris Doctorate certificate from the University of Southern California, Gould School of Law. He was called to bar in Washington in March 2017. He worked as a partner for Bingham McCutchen LLP from 1993 to 1995 after which he moved over to Pillsbury partner Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP. In 1998, he turned into a partner at Belin Rawlings and Badal law office. The lawyer is the MD in the West Coast for Venable LLP and assumes responsibility for their branches in LA and San Francisco.
