Colton Underwood was born on January 26, 1992, in Indianapolis, Indiana. His parents, Scott and Donna Underwood were accomplished athletes while students at Illinois State University, playing football and volleyball respectively. Underwood would go on to carry on his family's athletic legacy by playing football during his own time at Illinois State University.

Underwood spent his youth in Washington, Illinois. Underwood has a younger brother named Connor. After his parents divorced, they both remarried, giving Colton and Connor a handful of half-siblings.

After playing college football, Underwood was signed to the NFL by the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent, though he was waived at the end of August. He was next signed by the Philadelphia Eagles for their practice squad, though he was released from that a week later. The Chargers picked Underwood up again for their practice squad. He spent time on the practice squad as well as injured reserved before ultimately being released.

Underwood then went on to compete in the reality shows The Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise, and The Bachelor. He ultimately partnered up with Cassie Randolph from the show. They have been together for over a year.

Underwood's cousin Harper suffers from cystic fibrosis and started a foundation in her honor. It is known for starting the Legacy Project which benefits children with the condition.
