Bobby Baker (1937-present) is an American political figure and lobbyist who served as the Secretary to the Majority Leader of the United States Senate from 1964 to 1974. He is best known for his involvement in the Watergate scandal and his subsequent conviction for tax evasion.

Early Life

Bobby Baker was born in 1937 in Washington, D.C. He attended the University of Maryland, where he earned a degree in political science. After college, he worked as a legislative assistant for Senator Mike Mansfield, the Majority Leader of the United States Senate. In 1964, he was appointed Secretary to the Majority Leader, a position he held until 1974.

Involvement in Watergate

In 1972, Baker was implicated in the Watergate scandal. He was accused of using his position to influence legislation and to gain access to government contracts. He was also accused of using his influence to obtain kickbacks from companies that received government contracts. Baker was eventually convicted of tax evasion and served a year in prison.


After his release from prison, Baker returned to Washington, D.C. and became a lobbyist. He worked for several prominent companies, including the American Medical Association and the National Association of Manufacturers. He also served as a consultant to the Reagan administration.
