Bill Russell

William Felton Russell was an NBA center with the Boston Celtics from 1956 until 1969. He was the nucleus of the Celtics dynasty, which won eleven NBA titles, and Russell was a five-time NBA Most Valuable Player and a 12-time All-Star during his 13-year career.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame both inducted him. He was named to the NBA 25th Anniversary Team in 1971, the NBA 35th Anniversary Team in 1980, and the NBA 50th Anniversary Team in 1996, making him one of just four players to receive all three distinctions. He was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2009, the NBA renamed the Most Valuable Player award after Russell: it is now known as the Bill Russell NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award. William Felton Russell was born on February 12, 1934, in Monroe, Louisiana. His initial youth was formed by weakness as he fought a few distinct diseases. When Russell was 10, his father, Charlie, tired of exploring a racially charged South, moved his family over to Oakland, California, where he looked for some employment at a shipyard. In California, life for the Russell family proved rough. Statue

Russell was recognized by the city of Boston, which erected a statue of him on City Hall Plaza in 2013 depicting him in-game, surrounded by 11 plinths reflecting the 11 championships he helped the Celtics win.

To highlight Russell's many accomplishments, each plinth has a key term and a relevant statement. The project was supported by the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation's Bill Russell Legacy Foundation. Ann Hirsch of Somerville, Massachusetts, created the artwork in partnership with Boston-based Pressley Associates Landscape Architects. Russell was present for the unveiling of the statue on November 1, 2013. Two sculptures of children were added two years later, in the spring of 2015, to recognize Bill Russell's devotion to working with children. A local kid from Somerville and several girls from the nearby area modeled these statues.

Russell Rule of the West Coast Conference

The West Coast Conference (WCC), which has been home to Russell's alma mater, USF, since the league's inception in 1952, became the first NCAA Division I conference to adopt a conference-wide diversity hiring commitment on August 2, 2020, announcing the Russell Rule, which is modeled after the NFL's Rooney Rule. The WCC noted in its announcement:

Every athletic director, senior administrator, head coach, and full-time assistant coach post in the athletic department must include a member of a traditionally underrepresented group in the pool of final candidates, according to the "Russell Rule."
