Early Life
William "Bill" MacPhail was born on April 15, 1920 in New York City. He was the son of a successful businessman and his mother was a homemaker. He attended the prestigious Horace Mann School in the Bronx and graduated in 1938. After high school, he attended Yale University, where he earned a degree in economics.
Career
After graduating from Yale, MacPhail began his career in the broadcasting industry. He started out as a radio announcer for the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1940. He quickly rose through the ranks and was eventually promoted to the position of vice president of programming. In this role, he was responsible for the development and production of radio programs.
In 1950, MacPhail was hired by CBS to become the president of the network's sports division. He was the first person to hold this position and was instrumental in the development of the network's sports programming. He was responsible for the creation of the first televised Major League Baseball game in 1951. He also helped to create the first televised NFL game in 1956.
MacPhail was also responsible for the creation of the first televised college football game in 1952. He was also instrumental in the development of the first televised golf tournament in 1954. He was also responsible for the creation of the first televised college basketball game in 1957.
In addition to his work in television, MacPhail was also responsible for the development of the first professional baseball league in Japan in 1950. He was also responsible for the creation of the first professional basketball league in Japan in 1952.
Later Life
MacPhail retired from CBS in 1965. After his retirement, he served as a consultant for the network and was also a member of the board of directors of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978.
MacPhail passed away on October 8, 1992 at the age of 72. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
Legacy
MacPhail is remembered as one of the most influential figures in the history of sports broadcasting. He was responsible for the development of the first televised Major League Baseball game, the first televised NFL game, the first televised college football game, the first televised golf tournament, and the first televised college basketball game. He was also responsible for the creation of the first professional baseball league in Japan and the first professional basketball league in Japan.
