Tim Russert was an American journalist, lawyer, and author who was best known for his work as the longest-serving moderator of NBC's Meet the Press. He was born on May 7, 1950, in Buffalo, New York, to parents Timothy Joseph Russert Sr. and Elizabeth "Betty" Russert.
Early Life
Tim Russert was raised in a working-class family in South Buffalo. His father was a sanitation worker and his mother was a homemaker. He attended John F. Kennedy High School and graduated in 1968. He then went on to attend John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972. After graduating, he attended the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1976.
Career
After graduating from law school, Russert began his career as an aide to Daniel Patrick Moynihan, a Democratic senator from New York. He then went on to work as a staff member for the United States Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources. In 1984, he joined NBC News as a political analyst and was eventually promoted to the position of Washington bureau chief.
In 1991, Russert was named the moderator of Meet the Press, a position he held until his death in 2008. During his tenure, he interviewed numerous prominent political figures, including presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. He also wrote two books, Big Russ & Me: Father and Son: Lessons of Life (2004) and Wisdom of Our Fathers: Lessons and Letters from Daughters and Sons (2006).
Death
On June 13, 2008, Russert died suddenly of a heart attack while at work in the NBC News bureau in Washington, D.C. He was 58 years old. His death was met with an outpouring of grief from the political and media communities. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008.
