Early Life

Theo Sommer was born in Berlin in 1930. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a teacher. He attended the University of Freiburg, where he studied law and political science. After graduating in 1954, he began his career as a journalist, working for the German newspaper Die Welt.

Career

In 1965, Sommer joined the editorial staff of Die Zeit, a weekly newspaper based in Hamburg. He quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed editor-in-chief in 1985. During his tenure, he was credited with modernizing the paper and making it one of the most influential publications in Germany. He was also known for his strong commitment to freedom of the press and his willingness to take on controversial topics.

In addition to his work at Die Zeit, Sommer was also a prolific author. He wrote several books on German politics and history, including The German Question (1985) and The German Miracle (1989). He also wrote a number of essays and opinion pieces for various publications.

Later Life

In 2005, Sommer retired from his position at Die Zeit and was succeeded by his longtime deputy editor, Josef Joffe. He continued to write and lecture on German politics and history until his death in 2018.
