Phillip Knightley (1929-2018) was an Australian journalist and author who was best known for his investigative journalism and his books on the history of espionage. He was born in Sydney, Australia, and studied at the University of Sydney, where he earned a degree in English and History.
Early Career
Knightley began his career as a journalist in the 1950s, working for the Sydney Morning Herald. He quickly gained a reputation for his investigative reporting, and in 1960 he was awarded the Walkley Award for his coverage of the Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa. He went on to work for the Sunday Times in London, where he wrote extensively about the Vietnam War and the Cold War. He also wrote a number of books on the history of espionage, including The Master Spy: The Story of Kim Philby (1988) and The Second Oldest Profession: Spies and Spying in the Twentieth Century (1986).
Investigative Journalism
Knightley was known for his investigative journalism, and he was one of the first journalists to uncover the truth about the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam. He also wrote extensively about the CIA's involvement in the overthrow of the Chilean government in 1973. His work was highly influential, and he was awarded the James Cameron Award for his coverage of the My Lai Massacre in 1971.
Books
In addition to his investigative journalism, Knightley wrote a number of books on the history of espionage. His most famous book was The Master Spy: The Story of Kim Philby (1988), which was a biography of the British double agent. He also wrote The Second Oldest Profession: Spies and Spying in the Twentieth Century (1986), which was a comprehensive history of espionage. His other books included The First Casualty: The War Correspondent as Hero and Myth-Maker from the Crimea to Kosovo (1975) and A Hack's Progress: From the Telegraph to the Internet (1998).
Legacy
Knightley was a highly respected journalist and author, and his work had a lasting impact on the field of investigative journalism. He was awarded the Order of Australia in 1989 for his services to journalism, and he was inducted into the Australian Media Hall of Fame in 2006. He died in 2018 at the age of 89.
