Lawrence K. Grossman is an American media executive and former president of NBC News and PBS. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of television news.
Early Life
Lawrence K. Grossman was born in New York City on April 15, 1937. He attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959. After graduating, he began his career in television news as a production assistant at CBS News in New York.
Career
Grossman quickly rose through the ranks at CBS, becoming a producer and then a senior producer. In 1972, he was appointed vice president of news and public affairs at NBC News. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the network's news coverage and developing new programming.
In 1978, Grossman was promoted to president of NBC News. During his tenure, he was credited with transforming the network's news division into one of the most respected in the industry. He was also responsible for launching the popular news magazine show Dateline NBC.
In 1993, Grossman left NBC to become president of PBS. During his time at PBS, he was credited with expanding the network's programming and increasing its viewership. He also oversaw the launch of the popular children's show Sesame Street.
In 1999, Grossman retired from PBS and returned to NBC as a consultant. He has since served as a consultant for various media companies, including the Discovery Channel and the Weather Channel.
Legacy
Grossman is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of television news.
