Early Life

Jack London was born on January 12, 1876 in San Francisco, California. His parents were William Chaney and Flora Wellman. His father was an astrologer and spiritualist, while his mother was a music teacher. London was raised by his mother and stepfather, John London, a Civil War veteran. He had two half-siblings, Eliza and Henry.

London was a bright student and was accepted into the University of California, Berkeley in 1894. However, he dropped out after only one semester due to financial difficulties. He then began working as a seaman and traveled around the world. During this time, he wrote his first novel, The Cruise of the Dazzler, which was published in 1902.

Writing Career

London's writing career began in earnest in 1903 with the publication of his novel The Call of the Wild. The book was an instant success and established London as a major literary figure. He went on to write many more novels, including White Fang, The Sea-Wolf, and The Iron Heel. He also wrote short stories, essays, and non-fiction works.

London was a prolific writer and was able to support himself solely through his writing. He was also a socialist and wrote extensively about the plight of the working class. His works often featured themes of adventure, survival, and the struggle between man and nature.

Later Life and Death

London was married twice and had three children. He was an avid traveler and spent much of his later life exploring the world. He also wrote extensively about his travels and experiences.

London died on November 22, 1916 at the age of 40. He had been suffering from health problems for some time and had been hospitalized for kidney disease. His death was a shock to the literary world and he was mourned by many.

Legacy

London's works remain popular to this day and have been adapted into numerous films and television shows. He is remembered as one of the most influential writers of the early 20th century and his works continue to inspire readers around the world.
