Early Life
Hargus Melvin Robbins, better known as “Pig” Robbins, was born on April 18, 1938 in Spring City, Tennessee. He was the youngest of five children born to a sharecropper family. Growing up, Robbins was exposed to a variety of musical styles, including gospel, bluegrass, and country. He began playing the piano at the age of five and was soon performing in local churches and at school events.
Musical Career
Robbins’ professional career began in the 1950s when he joined the Grand Ole Opry house band. He quickly became a sought-after session musician, playing on records by artists such as Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash. He also toured with Cash and was a member of his band, the Tennessee Three.
Robbins’ career as a session musician continued to grow in the 1960s and 1970s. He played on records by Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and many others. He also released several solo albums, including “Pig Robbins Plays the Hits” (1966) and “Pig Robbins and Friends” (1970).
In the 1980s, Robbins began to focus more on songwriting. He wrote songs for artists such as George Jones, Tammy Wynette, and Reba McEntire. He also wrote the hit song “Forever and Ever, Amen” for Randy Travis, which won a Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1988.
Legacy
Robbins’ career spanned more than six decades and he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. He was also honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association in 2011.
Robbins’ influence on country music is undeniable. He was a master of the piano and a prolific songwriter. His songs have been covered by countless artists and his playing can be heard on some of the most iconic records in country music history.
Robbins passed away on April 1, 2018 at the age of 79. He left behind a legacy of music that will continue to inspire generations to come.
