Early Life
Alexander Clifford was born on April 15, 1887 in London, England. He was the son of a wealthy banker and was raised in a privileged environment. He attended the prestigious Eton College and then went on to study at Oxford University. After graduating, he joined the British Army and served in World War I.
Military Career
Clifford was a decorated soldier and was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery in battle. He rose to the rank of Major and was eventually promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. He was also appointed as the commander of the British Expeditionary Force in France. During his time in the military, he was known for his leadership skills and his ability to inspire his troops.
Political Career
After the war, Clifford decided to pursue a career in politics. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1922 and served as a Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party. He was a strong advocate for free trade and was a vocal opponent of the Labour Party. He also served as the Minister of Defence from 1924 to 1929.
Later Life
Clifford retired from politics in 1929 and returned to his family estate in Scotland. He spent the rest of his life in relative seclusion, but he remained active in the Conservative Party. He died in 1965 at the age of 78.
